John Hunter, with his wife Karen and family, moved to
Gouverneur in 1979. Shortly after he
established Can-Am Cattle Service. For
many years, John worked throughout the north country breeding cows. His well-known reputation was built on
honesty, expertise and love of agriculture.
At home, the family raised beef and dairy cattle, poultry, sheep and
swine which they showed annually at the Fair.
John spent many years judging both youth and open class
cattle, sheep, swine and poultry shows across New York State and Canada. He always encouraged youth by explaining what
to look for and why it’s important, whether they were judging or showing an
animal.
John was a lifetime member of the Gouverneur and St.
Lawrence County Fair. He served as a director
for many years, and finished serving as an Honorary Life Director. He also spent many years as Superintendent
of the Beef Cattle, Poultry and Sheep Departments.
Even with everything going on fair week, John was always
there to help when ever needed. He was
known as the “Gate Keeper” during Harness Race Day. As part of the Beef Show, he created the Beef
Cook Off….Yummy! If there was a
grandstand event, John would be there to help out. In the fall, John spent hours driving the cow
train at the annual Pumpkin Festival and in the spring you could find him flipping
burgers at the annual Demolition Derby.
Thank you John for your dedication and all your support over
the years. We will miss you, but know
that your commitment and support will never be forgotten!
